How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs with Heat

Bed bug infestations have been steadily growing in number since the 1990’s. It is believed that these tough critters have become resistant to some of the pesticides typically used to kill them.

Even four and five star hotels have found that they have a bed bug problem. If you stay in a hotel room with bed bugs there is a real good possibility that you will take them home with you.

Buying second hand furniture or mattresses is another common way people bring bed bugs into their home.

If you think you have a bed bug infestation you will want to attack it quickly and aggressively as these little buggers can be tough to get rid of.

Bed bugs are nocturnal, coming out to feed on you in the dark after you go to sleep. So how do you know you have a bed bug infestation if you don’t actually see the bugs?

Blood smears, fecal droppings and molts of the insect are sure signs that the bed bugs have moved in.

Many people like the idea of getting rid of bed bugs without the use of harmful pesticides. Bed bugs have become resistant to many of these products anyway. When the main area to be treated includes your sleeping space, a natural approach is very appealing.

One natural way to get rid of bed bugs is through the use of heat. But it can’t be just any type of heat. You don’t want to start using your blow dryer on your mattress as you may burn it or melt the cover.

The best type of heat to use on your mattress is a hand held steam cleaner. Be sure to vacuum your mattress before using this method. Use the steam cleaner to thoroughly clean your mattress including all seams and crevices.

Linens from the bed should be washed and dried on the hottest setting allowed for the fabric. Items that cannot be washed should be put into the dryer on high heat.

Cushions from furniture that cannot be washed should be place in black garbage bags, tied tightly and set in the driveway in the sun.  Here in Florida, this is a sure way to create enough heat to kill the bed bugs.
