Bed bugs have become nearly epidemic all over the world and Florida is no exception. There was a time when bed bugs were practically eradicated due to the development and use of stronger pesticides but they have come back with a vengeance.
Bed bugs are extremely hard to get rid of once they have invaded your home. In order to get rid of them effectively you will want to attack the problem as quickly as possible.
Absolutely everything in the infested room that can be washed needs to be taken out and put straight into the washing machine. This should be done using sealed, heavy duty, plastic bags. Bed bugs are easily spread and you don’t want to take a problem in one room and move it throughout your home.
Wash all bed linens including the mattress cover and anything else that can be washed on the highest heat possible for the fabric and then dry the items on the highest setting possible.
Now you want to attack the room with a step by step approach. The first product you should use is a Boric Acid mixed with a Botanical Pesticide from a company such as EcoSMART. This will be a 50/50 mixture. Use this mixture to dust the mattress making sure you reach all crevices.
All areas of the bed should be dusted including the headboard and any little cracks and crevices in the wood where bed bugs like to hide.
The second product you want to use to attack the bed bugs is a Pyrethrum based dust. There are liquids available but clinical studies show that the dust is more effective as bed bugs are becoming immune to the liquid form.
Use this dust to treat the room including cracks in wood, and baseboards, especially under baseboards where there may be spaces between the floor and the baseboard.
Unfortunately, bed bugs are so hard to get rid of that you will probably have to repeat this process one or two times until you are confident all the bed bugs are gone.
